We are plagued with gum diseases and a thorough "scaling" and polishing is a must if you want to keep your teeth for as long as you live. Healthy gums and teeth are quintessential, but if plaque gets in the way or calculus , gingivitis (stage 2 ) or periodontitis (stage 3) or advanced periodontitis * can occur. When gums swell and bleed it is a sign of gingivitis (gums are inflamed- red) . If the patient doesnt get it treated it evolves to stage 3, this time inflammation causes the gums to separate from the tooth forming pockets with early to moderate bone loss. If nothing is done yet we move to advanced periodontitis, and here there is severe bone loss deep pockets and the teeth are in danger of falling out.
